David Letterman's Blackmail and Apology

So, last Thursday Letteman talked about different affairs he has had over the years. He highlighte one that took place with a person on his staff. This particular staff member blackmailed letterman, telling him that they would tell alot about the 62 year olds private life if he didnt give her some money. So, Letterman paid her 2 million dollars. He has now publically appologized to his wife about his behavior. But what I dont understand is why he brought it up in the first place. And are these the things that people are really interested in. I mean this is a top story in the media right now. Really is this infotainment what we are reduced too. Why are the media not reporting on things that make sense, that are important. I could care less What Letterman has done in his personal life!! For real!!! What about health care, education, the war, our economy, unemployment!!! PLEASE start reporting on things that really matter. For those that are interested here is his apology:

  1. It is true that there are more important things happening in our counrty, but the people seem to be really interested in scandal. I think that Letterman's scandal has said alot about people. For one thing I saw a clip of when he announced his affair on his show, and the crowd applauded. Like "way to go". Even the audiance member from the above video said that "people support him". I think that he has some how managed to "work" the media to view him as a victim. If people were as worried about what their representatives were doing as they are Letterman's sex life people would not be flipping out about death pannels and public options...they would already know how the situation was developing and how thier represenative would act.

  2. I completely agree!!! People do not do their research and so they freak out when something new happens because as you said they don't know the back story!!! And its really annoying and frustrating. When is the American public going to take some action and get involved in their own democracy by looking behind things and going for the facts!!! I mean really. Come on people.

  3. I agree, it is like we learned in class media is not investigated by the consumer. They just see it as fragmented pieces and latch on to them. Next thing you know the story is misconstrued. I wish Americans cared more about being knowledgeable instead of what a celebrity figure is doing.
